You hear it on the news, you read about it in magazines and papers, and it's the accepted word on the street - our society is becoming increasingly violent, and this is largely due to video games. People often point at the selection of wear related, or violence related video games and in one fell swoop, tarnish all video games as causing nothing but a decrease in the moral standard of our society, and with the same sweep, tarnish all young people who play these games as either actual or potential thugs, who will do little more than hang around on street corners mugging people, or causing other distressful crimes.

Although at first glance it would appear that statistics offered by these people appear to bear testimony to what they say, on closer examination it becomes very quickly apparent that the truth is much farther from this portrayal of it......

It is a fact that the accident and emergency wards of hospitals see a good number of young people who have been admitted as a result of violent crime. In fact, the actual number of such cases has fallen quite dramatically in recent years, although no such decrease has been seen in the number of video games being played, or in their popularity. It is also a fact that the vast majority of these young people who have been involved in violent crime are regular players of video games.

But this statistic is woefully misleading. Since ninety percent of young boys play video games, it is always going to be the case that any random selection of boys will result in the vast majority of them being regular players of video games. It would make as much sense to identify all the young boys who volunteer for charity work occasionally, or take part in fundraising, and then identify how many of them play video games regularly. Since ninety percent of all boys play video games regularly, then these fundraising charity volunteers are going to mostly be gamers - but this is not to suggest that playing video games make you more charitable, in just the same way that playing video games doesn't make you a violent thug.

Forty percent of girls play video games, which is to say nearly half, so again, if nearly half of all girls admitted into hospital after being involved in a violent crime are branded as being there because of video games, it makes as much sense to suggest that by not playing video games, half the girls have ended up in hospital.

These are the statistics that those who have a deep mistrust of video games like to publicise, but upon closer inspection, these claims are wildly unfounded, based on hopelessly meaningless figures and provided as only half the truth. In fact, there is no evidence to suggest that playing video games makes a person become violent. The home life and upbringing has far more influence on a person's social and moral attitudes that a computer game.

Play with PS3

Okay, so you probably weren't too happy with NCAA 08 playing on your Playstation. After all, you got into the action at just 30 fps (frames per second). Xbox players had it better - at 60 fps. Sony has heard your cry and answered your prayers. NCAA 09 can now be played on the PS3 at a faster, smoother 60 fps......

And if you want to be part of the Blu-ray DVD wave of the future, this is an excellent console to get. After all, there are other games out there that you want to immerse yourself in. Playing control and manipulation on the NCAA 09 is also much improved, so that's probably something you can perform deftly with the PS3. If you don't mind the occasional less-than-perfect color, images and graphics, go ahead and choose the PS3.

Play with Xbox 360

If it's graphics you're after, go with the Xbox. Per pound of muscle, Xbox 360 easily trumps PS3, even if Sony's release papers say otherwise. Its GPU is simply much more powerful, allowing you to enjoy the stadium views in all its pixilated glory. Vertex processing is also well worth it.

If you're talking high def, Xbox can deliver, something than PS3 can't, since its anti-aliasing technique is a wee bit backward than that of Xbox. Since you'll probably want to take pleasure in scoring that touchdown without feeling like you've been blinking the whole time, get your NCAA 09 Football game on the Xbox. After all, your hands may do all the work but your eyes are the ones doing the navigating. Give them a good treat.

Which one to use to play NCAA 09 Football with?

If price matters to you, get the Xbox 360. For one, the PS3 is more expensive, although you'll need to shell out additional cash to get HD-DVD on your Xbox. But with the faster rate of running NCAA 09 Football, there shouldn't be a lot of complaints on your part if you choose the PS3.

However, for the money and the sheer enjoyment of a great-looking game at its spiffiest, you might want to try the Xbox 360. NCAA 09 Football's latest enhancement suit this gaming system. But again, it still depends on your own inclinations.

You may have been lucky enough to play on a virtual golf game such as TopGolf, TopPutt or TopChip, each of these games has been created by World Golf Systems (WGS). Each of these games is based around an ID Ball System, which sees microchips incorporated into golf balls.

Established in 1997 was especially created in the UK to focus on the use of technology to bring golf to a wider audience. The initial idea was for TopGolf, which saw World Golf Systems work with the US Maxfli golf company to create a golf ball capable of being tracked without affecting the flight of the ball. This ultimately led to the game as it is today.....

With World Golf Systems's TopGolf there is no need to walk around a golf course and is a points driven game of golf that can be played indoors from within a specialised bay. What happens is that micro chipped balls are hit from a tee using real clubs, and the aim is to hit targets on the virtual landscape. These targets can range from 20 to 240 yards, and there is an instant visual recognition of how far and how accurate the shot was.

World Golf Systems have designed a game for five players that incorporates four different target based games; TopShot (hitting in order); TopBreak (creating snooker like breaks); TopPressure (short game practice); and TopPractice (distance and accuracy practice). There is though no game that mirrors a full round of golf.

World Golf Systems have launched three game centres to host TopGolf, one in Essex, one in Surrey and one in Watford. At these venues a game costs from £2.40 and £4.80 depending on day of the week and time when the game is played. These centres normally have about fifty bays where 5 people can play at one time, making it great for corporate events, birthday bashes and social occasions. These venues are great for golfers and non-golfers and there are instructors to give pointers if required.

World Golf Systems have followed the initial success of Top Golf with the launch of Top Putt and Top Chip. These other games are simpler versions revolving around putting and chipping, which have made them easier to place in amusement arcades and places like bowling alleys.

All in all World Golf Systems are well on their way to achieving their dream of creating a whole new leisure form.

Use Aperture and Shutter Priority modes to keep backgrounds in focus (aperture mode) or freeze fast-moving action shots (shutter priority)
Use Full Manual Mode to set both aperture and shutter modes together (though this can get complicated, use your histogram to judge the sweet spot)
Try burst mode to capture a bunch of shots, rapid-fire
Use histogram displays to quickly check if you have overexposed a shot
Use exposure bracketing to try the same shot at different exposure levels to find the one that ultimately looks best.

These tips will take some time to master. Be patient, persistent, and experiment you will be happy that you did.

If you're reading this right now your probably considering purchasing a digital camera right now but aren't quite sure which one to purchase. Some questions you may want to consider when purchasing a new camera are:

1.How much does the camera cost?

2.How long does the battery last?

3.How much is a replacement / spare battery?

4.How many mega pixels is the camera?

5.How much optical zoom is on the camera?

6.How big is the LCD screen on the camera?

These, along with many others, are some important questions you will need to ask your self when looking at different digital cameras to purchase. I have reviewed the Casio EX-Z750 digital camera and have been very impressed with the results and have, therefore, been so inclined to write this review about it.

1. How much does the camera cost? - A nice digital camera can get fairly pricey these days so it is important that you do some research and make sure you are buying the camera you need and want. For instance if you don't need a 12 Mega-Pixel camera, then don't buy it. The images will be larger and you won't receive any benefit for it since you don't need it. I would recommend a good online store such as http://www.shipanddrop.com - They carry only a few Digital Cameras but if they have the one you need their price is cheap and the quality is great. The link above points to the Casio EX-Z750 camera and is a steal at only $235.88.....

2. How long does the battery last? - A very important question to ask yourself when purchasing a new camera; How would you like to be taking pictures of that special moment when your daughter is on stage and go to snap a picture and suddenly your camera automatically turns of?. I can tell you from similar experience that when your digital camera dies when you need the most is not an enjoyable experience. The Casio EX-Z750 digital camera has a very high battery life - It comes with an NP-40 lithium battery that will take over 320 shots before going needing a recharge! That's nearly twice the amount of many other leading cameras, thats why I love this camera so much.

3. How much is a replacement / spare battery? - It is always good to have a backup battery with you in case you have an emergency when you forgot to recharge your battery or it is dead for whatever reason. Since most cameras don't come with a spare battery you may want to consider purchasing a second one. The cost of battery replacement is the main drawback I've seen to the Casio EX-Z750 at about $40 or more for a new battery. Again I would suggest http://www.shipanddrop.com for any camera accessories since they are very cheap for gifts.

4. How many mega pixels is the camera? - This can be an important feature, however, it depends on what purpose you need the camera. If you are planning on getting paid for your pictures or want extremely high quality pictures you may want to ensure the camera you purchase has a high number of mega pixels. The Casio EX-Z750 takes pictures at 7.2 mega pixels which is definitely a high quality picture. I wouldn't recommend anything over 8 mega pixels unless you have a specific purpose for it.

5. How much optical zoom is on the camera? - An important feature of each camera is how much optical zoom is on it, some companies put digital zoom on their cameras at high amounts like 10x or more, however, it is good to note that the quality of the digital zoom is very poor that is why it is important that you make sure the camera has a good amount of optical zoom on it. A fair and mostly standard amount of optical zoom on digital cameras today is 3x zoom. The Casio EX-Z750 camera has 3x optical zoom on it, although it doesn't exceed in this field it is sufficient. I would not suggest purchasing a camera with less than 3x optical zoom.

6. How big is the LCD screen on the camera? - Although this feature is not critical to the quality of pictures, it is just plain nice to have a big LCD screen to view your pictures. It does help, however, to view the quality of your pictures (make sure everyone is smiling) since you can see the image more clearly. Going back to the Casio EX-Z750 it has a nice big 2.5" LCD screen.

It is important to note that there are other features of a digital camera that are important, however, these are the ones I have found the most important. Overall the Casio EX-Z750 is a great digital camera in my opinion and I would suggest it to the average consumer. I hope this article was helpful to you in your new digital camera purchase.

Simply put watching movies on Blu-ray is stunning. The picture and sound is incredible. The Xbox 360 supports HD-DVD, but you have to buy an extra add on player for this function to work! High definition on the Wii? Forget it, it's not available! I wanted to play games and have the next generation of video playback......

After hearing about the capabilities of the PS3 I started to shop around. Like most people, paying $499 for a game system was just too much. I tried many of the big retailers; Best Buy, Comp USA, Circuit City, and so on. Basically what I learned was that retailers such as these agree to set the price that Sony wants. You just won't find it priced lower then this at any of these stores.

So now I will let you in on how I got a PS3 for $327 dollars. One word: eBay. Let me say this, there are some incredible deals on that site. Now I know a lot of people don't like the hassle of dealing with eBay, but I found a few sites that help out with process. But all this hardware isn't any good without the games to run on all of it. But don't worry. The absolute earliest and first game to be played on some type of a cathode ray tube, and use some type of computer, was a missile simulator type game played on circular screen that looked much like the old radar screens used during World War II. This game was created by Thomas T. Goldsmith Jr. and Estle Ray Mann in 1947. The creation of this game was significant because it marks the beginning of a new age of cathode ray tube and what they can be used for. Up until this point any display like this was simply used as something to be seen. With this game a player could look at it and make changes to what happened on it. It was interactive!

In 1952, what many consider to be the first graphical game was created by A.S.Douglas and it was a tic-tac-toe game called OXO. Over the course of the next two decades between the 1950's and 1960's a variety of other rudimentary games started to make appearances with the use of large computers that were tube based. One of the most notable was the game Tennis for two which was created by William Higinbotham in 1958. This game was played on an oscilloscope display......

Video games start to become more sophisticated and take on more realism in the 60's and the first game to do this was a game called Space War. It was created for a Digital Equipment Corporation computer and it was two spaceships (players) that engaged in a shootout on a starry background. One of the significant things about this game was that the ships were in a gravity well that affected how they moved and how the player had to operate them. This game has been recreated and copied in many different arcade and home versions like Galaxy Wars and in variations like Asteroids.

The First Publicly Released Game

The first game released to the mass public was called Computer Space. It was based on the Space War game and it was a coin operated arcade style game created by Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney. It was released in 1971. And in 1972 they released the arcade game Pong which was a big success. These games were the beginnings of the Atari Company.

Video Games Move onto the home Television Set

The very first console video game system that could be played on a television set at home was the Magnavox Odyssey. It was designed by Ralph Baer and it was first released to the public in 1972 and It only met with limited success. In 1975 the real revolution in video games for the home began with the release of the home version of Pong by Atari. Atari landed an exclusive contract for 175,000 units with Sears who would market it and sell It in their stores. The game was a smash success for the 1975 Christmas season. One of little thought about revolutions about this game was that all the discrete wiring was designed into a single chip which was the most advanced consumer electronics chip ever made until then. This opened up a whole new world of computer games.

Video games have had an interesting history with a lot of different people contributing to their success. They have come a long way and there are no doubt many more interesting and exciting developments to come.

The Final Windows XP Service Pack Update Ever - XP Service Pack 3

The beta version of Service Pack 3 [SP3] for XP is out now. The official release date for XP SP3 is rumoured to be made available via Windows Update on April 29 2008. This final service pack update for XP will offer security updates rather than anything else. There will be no cosmetic changes although a slight increase in the operating speed of up to 10% has been reported.

You can download SP3 now if you wish. Visit Microsoft's homepage and follow the links to XP Service Pack 3. I don't recommend this way of getting Service Pack 3. I'd suggest waiting for the service pack update to be made available via Windows Update on 29th April 2008 [tbc]. This update will have been tested more vigorously than the beta version.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 won't include any major new features. However it will include four new features that will improve the operating system's reliability and security......

They are:

Network Access Protection compatibility. This feature allows Windows XP machines to interact with the NAP feature in Windows Server 2008. This functionality is built into the RTM version of Windows Vista as well.

Product Key-less install option. As with Windows Vista, new XP with SP3 installs can proceed without entering a product key during Setup.

Kernel Mode Cryptographics Module. A new kernel module that "encapsulates several different cryptographic algorithms," according to Microsoft.

"Black hole" router detection algorithm. XP gains the ability to ignore network routers that incorrectly drop certain kinds of network packets. This, too, is a feature of Windows Vista.

It has been four years since Windows XP Service Pack 2 was released, so this final service pack update is overdue. Windows XP, in general will not be supported past the middle part of 2009, so there is hope that the Service Pack 1 release for Vista works out well and irons most of the issues with Vista.

To install XP SP3 you must be running XP with service pack 1 at least and ideally XP service pack 2. There are a reported total of 1,073 fixes in XP SP3.

A lot of users have become used to Windows XP as service pack two did correct most of the issues within XP, and the thought of upgrading to Vista in its current incarnation and reported problems and issues has put a fair amount of people off from upgrading to Vista, me included.

When Windows 98 was no longer supported I was still using Windows 98 as Windows XP was in the similar position to how Vista is now. So I presume being patient and waiting for Microsoft to 'fix' Vista will be case of déjà vu and Vista will be in a much more stable position when Microsoft finally stops supporting Windows XP.

If you are using Windows XP then installing/updating to Service Pack 3 is highly advised as this will be the last service pack update for XP from Microsoft.

1. Purchase and install a well respected antivirus software program and be sure to set it up so that it automatically runs when the computer starts up.

2. Ensure that the antivirus software is kept up to date. Most software has a feature that warns you when it is going to expire.

3. Set your antivirus program to scan for potential viruses each time you open a word-processing document like the ones that get sent through email. Viruses found in word-processing documents are called Macro Viruses......

4. You should only download software from the internet if it is really necessary. There maybe some great programs available online, but there are also many bad viruses too.

5. There are many ways to swap data between two different computers. I don't recommend you do this unless it is unavoidable, and even then you must scan the storage device you are transferring from for viruses.

6. When transferring data using a floppy disc, the disc must be formatted first.

7. Only use trusted vendors when you are buying new software for your computer.

One of the most common ways of catching a virus is to install pirate software. This is illegal and should never be done.

9. You must scan all programs you download of the web, BEFORE you open and install them on your computer.

10. Back up your files on regular basis so that if you do get infected, you can delete the corrupted files and replace them with clean ones that were saved earlier.

I can't guarantee, if you follow the step that I advise, that you won't get a computer virus, but I can promise you that it will be a less likely occurrence by far.

It is possible, in many cases; a bad file could be the culprit. It's strange how even the smallest file can affect something as powerful and smart as a computer, but if this bad file is in the registry, it could spell trouble.

Corrupted files in the registry can slow down your computer noticeably because the registry is the most important part of the operating system. In fact, the registry is what the operating system is composed of. The registry keeps track of user preferences, pointers to drivers as well as to all the software and hardware on the computer. If any of those files are corrupted, it can cause a lot of problems, namely slowdowns and even crashes.

Registry files left behind

Interesting to note is the fact when a program or file is deleted from the computer, some of the entries in the registry that pointed to this program or file get left in the registry. This means the Operating System will have to investigate pointers leading to nowhere. It is easy to see where enough such operations would take extra time. Thus, you end up with a slower computer.

If you see you have very little incidents of corruption in your registry, you can opt not to purchase it. If you have a lot of corruption, like a hundred or so incidents you can be sure, or at least very, very close to sure your computer slowdown is caused by registry corruption.

Right now you probably want to know if the computer scanner you show you a bunch of bogus corruption just to scare you into buying their program. Well, I've thought of this. So, I've scanned computers I knew were clean to see if I could find any crooks selling registry cleaner programs and I haven't found any yet. Make sure you buy a registry program from a company who gives a complete money back guarantee. That will take care of the matter.

Is this going to break me?

As far as cost is concerned, the top registry cleaners cost in the neighborhood of $30 to $50 for a year. I've seen them as high as $100 but really, you don't need top spend this much. A less pricey reg cleaner will be just fine.

Be wise, optimize...

Earlier I said, "The first part of the fix is as easy as finding a good registry cleaner and running it." So, is there another part to the fix? Well, sort of. Using a good registry cleaner will get your speed back but if part of that cleaner is an optimizer, you will find your computer will even gain more speed. There are a few cleaners that also optimize and this type of registry program is well worth having because they are not more expensive.

There are many other things that could slow down a computer, but getting a free registry scan is so easy, it is what I would recommend as a first step.

Once you installed the program, it begins initial indexing process of your hard disks. This may take several hours for an average size disk. The one-time indexing process only works when the computer has been idle for more than thirty seconds. Indexing for Google Desktop Search is an ongoing process, new files and emails get updated automatically. The search index created by the program resides on your own computer.

On your system tray you will see a swirled icon in Google colors, by clicking on it you will open the regular Google search page with the addition of Desktop along side with other search areas. Once the indexing is done, files are searched in under a second and the results are impressively precise. The top bar shows quantities of files found under the four categories, which include emails, files, chat and Web history. The results are shown in much the same way as regular Google interface. You can choose to see relevant results from all or any of the categories. You can also sort results by relevance or by date. By clicking on any result you open the file in respective application software.

The email query results are the best! No longer have you had to remember in which folder you stored the email written to John in reference to Peter. By searching for Peter or John, you will find all relevant emails and related correspondence. You can read and answer to any of the discovered email from the thread. This really saves time when you need to follow up to a large numbers of emails each day.

There are two more text buttons next to the search field. One is Desktop Preferences and other is Remove Items. Desktop preferences allow you to choose the types of files you would like the program to include in its index out of available ones. You can also point out not to index specific folders from your hard disk. If you share your PC with others, it’s a good idea to eliminate your private folders from the Desktop index. You can also specify not to index certain websites from your cached web history as well. The Remove items button allow you to eliminate selected results from the index.

The advance search option allows you to search by phrase by putting the phrase within quotation marks, to eliminate a word from search by putting a minus sign in front of the word, to search by file type, and to search within a web URL. A neat feature is to integrate your desktop search with your web search. This is very handy if you have already done an extensive search for some information and after a few days doing search for similar information once again.

Privacy question

By default, Google Desktop Search collects a limited amount of non-personal information from your computer and sends it to Google. This includes summary information, such as the number of searches you do and the time it takes for you to see your results, etc. You can opt out of sending this information during the installation process or from the Desktop preferences later. According to Google Privacy Policy no personally identifying information, such as your name or address, will be sent to Google without your explicit prior permission.

What is missing?

I bemoan not having PDF files in the search process as yet. I have dozens of e-books and PDF whitepapers residing in my PC, and I really would prefer to have them indexed. That way, I’d have been able to read materials, when I needed them most.

The other thing I want to see is clustered result of my query, which shows organized search results into meaningful hierarchical folders similar to the way Vivisimo search engine works. This clustering is particularly helpful for desktop search, as this allows us to see other relevant documents connected to the searched word.

Conclusion

Due to Google’s immense popularity as a search engine, it’s logical that most users will prefer Google’s desktop search program as oppose to other similar programs, such as Copernic and Hotbot. Finally you can search your very own computer with similar ease and preciseness as you have been searching the Internet for quite some time.

Keeping your CDs and DVDs in good condition is crucial to their longevity. It can be very frustrating when you discover that your audio CD that you haven't played in a year now skips in your player. CD and DVD media can realistically over 10 years if handled and stored properly.

You should also do the following:

When you buy blank media always purchase high quality, Grade A discs. You do get what you pay for in this market. In my opinion, the best manufacturers are Taiyo Yuden, Sony and Verbatim.

Write on your media with pens specially designed for CDs and DVDs. If you write with a regular ballpoint pen, you might damage the recording layer of the disc. Either the pressure from the tip of then pen will cause damage or, over the time, the ink from the pen will seep into the disc.
Don't store your media in high temperatures. I have known clients who store their media in shelves above their heaters. Although optical media can theoretically withstand temperatures as high as 50 degrees Celsius, it is best to keep the ambient temperature around 25 degrees. Store the discs in paper wallets or plastic casing such as clam shells to prevent dust and scratches. Also, try to hold the outside edges of the disc when you transport it from case to drive and back again.

Don't use paper labels on your media. This is especially important for discs that you use frequently or that might stay in your drive. It can get very hot in a CD or DVD drive. The heat of the drive, plus the spinning of the disc as it is read by the laser, can cause the labels to start to bubble and then peel. The balance of the disc will be disrupted and you will receive read errors. Even worse, the disc could become stuck in the drive. Another reason to stay away from these labels is the adhesive used can eventually seep into the reflective and dye layers of the disc rendering it useless.

One way to get people to hand over confidential information about themselves is to get them to fill in a form. This is known as phishing. An email claiming to be from a legitimate organization informs the recipient that because of a technical quirk, he must fill in a form on the company's site. When the link is clicked, the page that comes us is identical to the legitimate site the only difference being that the web address is slightly different although many-a-times barely noticeable. The form will request many of the details necessary to gain access to the account. Once the form has been filled in and submitted, the people running the phishing scam would have the details necessary to gain access to the web site of the original owner and perform any action granted to the person whose details were nicked. With Norton 360 this type of crime is protected against. When you attempt to log in to such a page, you will get warning that tell you that web address is that of a phishing site and that you should not proceed to it. As an added safeguard, Norton 360 automated form filling mechanisms will fail to work on the fake web site.

All the crimes mentioned above necessitate some action on the part of the user. For example, the user would have to download a file, click a link or run a program. Norton 360's firewall is a program that also guards against anyone trying to hack into a user's computer. Hackers usually look for weak spots in the computer's defenses through which they can gain access to your computer. Once inside they look for the goodies.

Norton 360 has not stopped at events that have a malicious origin. Something as simple as hard disk wear and tear can take away massive amounts of important data. So Norton 360 included an automated backup program that copies important data (including form passwords and a data) either to your local computer or to a remote storage site. A 2 GB offsite storage box is included with a subscription. With the latter option, if anything happens to the computer, the important data is safely stashed on a secure server thousands of miles away.

Norton knows its origins in PC optimization products and Norton 360 comes with PC performance tuneup software that ensures that the computer operates at its best. Any residual junk that may slow a computer and prevent it from operating at peak performance is adjusted in real time.

Also included in Norton 360 are monitoring solutions aimed at those who utilise wireless networks. How to Create a Wireless Network

Wireless networking allows you to easily share your Internet access as well as printers, and media, very easily without wires. Setting up a wireless network is generally very easy and it is becoming more and more commonplace to do this in your home or small office. The great thing about wireless networking is the fact you can add wireless functionality to your existing network.

If you intend to use wireless networking it is advisable to have windows XP service pack 2 as a minimum. Whilst this is not absolutely essential it can make things much easier when connecting to wireless networks and also a few security issues have been fixed with this service pack

The first stage to setting up a wireless network is to obtain the correct equipment. There are several different options, depending on your current setup. If you currently use a cable based provided then you just need a broadband router, however, if you currently use the more common ADSL style broadband suppliers (common here in the UK) then you will need to ensure you purchase the router with the ADSL modem built in. The router will now connect to the Internet for you and allow other devices to connect to it wirelessly. If you were previously used to having to go to a dial up connection - you now no longer need to do this as as soon as your computer connects to the router - you will automatically be connected to the Internet.
To connect your wireless router should be straight forward enough. If you use the CD that comes with the router it will quickly guide you through the setup. The basics are to plug your existing modem into the router if you are on a cable system, or disconnected your previous broadband modem and input your settings into the new router. You should have indicator lights advising you of the routers status. These vary from router to router so refer to your instructions provided.

As previously mentioned, the CD that comes with the router is often the best way to quickly create a secure active wireless network. However, if you are like me, you may want to explore the settings of the router to configure it yourself. Here are some common terms you may come up againt.

- SSID - this is your networks name. Choose something unique, as generally it will come up with the manufacturer of the router name. When you try and search for the router with your computer you will want to identify which name represents you own router.

- WEP or WPA is the type of security encryption to prevent other people accessing your Internet connection. WPA will generally allow you to use a memorable word to user a password whilst WEP is more a randomly generated bunch of numbers and letter.

- Administrator Password - this is just the password to actually access the administration of your router. Unless someone has already got a connection to your router they will be unable to change settings. If you do use a password here, make sure it is something memorable as it is quite possible that you will not have to access the admin, once setup, for a very long time.

Now your router is all set up we need to understand how to connect a computer to the network. This is very easy to do. If you have wireless technology built into your computer then ensure it is switched on. If you haven't, insert your wireless device into the relevant port.

You should have a wireless icon in the bottom left hand corner by the clock. Right click here and search for wireless networks in range.

In the box that comes up you should see a list of the networks in your area that your computer has detected. Being wireless technology is so popular these days it is common to see several different routers in here from neighbours.

Within this list you should see the name that you previously inputted as you SSID. Double click this. You should now be prompted for either your WEP or WPA key - enter this.

You should now be connected. Go ahead and load your preferred Internet browser. You should be able to surf to any given page. - Congratulations - You have successfully configured your wireless network!

Ever dreams of being an animation star yourself? Apparently a company called Gizmoz has made this possible in a simple way through a proprietry technology that is able to manipulate your photos to form a series of animated expressions. You could then create a series of voice messages that sync with these expressions to send to your friends and family as a form of unique digital communication. As an example, imagine an animated Christmas greeting card with you on a Santa sleigh dressed in Santa's costume and shouting 'Merry Christmas'.

Normally speaking, this has to be accomplished in a 3D software. It can be pretty time-consuming, as a 3D model of the person has to be created. This is a process that involves manipulating a mesh of wire frames to eventually form a shape that resembles the subject matter. The second step involves 'texturing' the 3D model, where a series of manipulated digital photographs and textures are mapped onto the 3D model. This technique is similar to that used by game companies in the development of games that involve photo realistic computer players - usually involving existing soccer stars, wrestlers, basketball players, etc.

Next involves rigging the character - where the 3D character has to be given a skeleton so that it can be manipulated to move. The final step is the animation - where it involves manipulating the 3D model to create a series of body and facial movements.

Now before you are thinking of Angelina Jolie in Beowulf, I need to burst your bubble because Gizmoz's technology is nowhere as sophisticated. The above process of creating a 3D model to the final step of animating it is the ONLY way at the moment to create a Beowulf Angelina Jolie.

Gizmoz is a non-technical solution for people who want to deliver a fun personalized message with themselves as the stars and limitations are inevitable as with most other 'non-technical' solutions.

- It is limited to animating just expressions at this time. This means you can't expect Gizmoz to animate your body parts.

- The scenes are limited to what Gizmoz provides as template backdrops at the moment. You cannot customize beyond what Gizmoz provides.

To be honest, Gizmoz is nothing more than just plain old novelty to me - novelty that will wear out once better technology or more interesting substitutes get launched.

Saying this - Gizmoz - along with its investors, has taken a bold step to enable and empower individuals to express themselves in more realistic and imaginative ways and this effort should be applauded. With mobile giant DoCoMo and venture caps like Benchmark Capital and Columbia Capital believing in and funding Gizmoz, it would be interesting to see whether Gizmoz is an ace or a drop in the sea.

In his majority, living beings are biological systems that learn and based on that learning are capable of making decisions, where these decisions are generally based on survival.

In the same way the artificial intelligence systems require learning and making decisions, but unlike biological systems, artificial system operates on the basis of mathematical algorithms and learning is induced for specific purposes. Within artificial intelligence there are many categories, but in the case of intelligent computers the most used are artificial neural network and genetic algorithms among others.

The neural networks are no more than an emulation of the neural system of the brain, where each element of the biological system is replaced by a mathematical equivalent. An artificial neural network can do similar tasks of the human brain, tasks that a regular computer is unable to perform as image recognition, speech recognition and making decisions, the disadvantage of this system compared to a programmed system, is that it needs to be trained, in other words, a neural network without training is like a newborn child coming into the world, so scientists developed various models of neural networks each with different abilities and different algorithms.

Today the use of artificial intelligence and neural networks are being implemented in software, emulating the parallel nature of a neural network to a linear system. The most common applications are voice recognition, character recognition (OCR), image reconstruction and more, but are also being implemented in hardware, where lineal structure of processors is changed to a neural structure, which takes advantage of the parallel nature of the neural networks. This new technology is called Neural Processors.

Currently neural processors are being used in specific applications, such as robotics, where at the moment, it's easy to implement, but lately have been developing hybrid systems using microprocessors and neural processors, which are usually used in servers.

One might think that the technology of artificial intelligence will help society achieve a better standard of living, but also we must keep in mind, that inheriting our biological capabilities to a machine makes us more dependent on them, and that dependency, only inhibits our intellectual capacities. To avoid this, we must see these machines for what they are: tools to improve.

Iphone Insurance - How Should You Protect Your Expensive iPhone?

Unless you have been living under a rock for the last few months, you will have heard of the iPhone and all the fuss around it.

It is a handheld device from Apple, the makers of the iPod and the Apple Mac computer. It combines a mobile phone with an easy-to-use internet browser, and a big iPod (a music/sound MP3 player). So, in one device, you can listen to your favourite songs or radio shows, talk with your friends, and check the web for ... well, whatever you want to check the web for.

Anyone who has not yet used one is usually confused or resistant to the charms of the iPhone, saying it is all a big load of hype and marketing, in order to sell the device.

Anyone who has used an iPhone is usually raving mad about it, how great it is, how it is the next major breakthrough in telecommunications and gadgetry.

The truth is, in the next few years we will all be looking back on the iPhone as a groundbreaking item that many other manufacturers copied. It is far more advanced than any other phone or PDA handheld device available - by a long way.

All this super-advanced technology means one thing to its price: It is not cheap.

There are a few knock on effects of it being expensive:

1. iPhone owners will be quite careful of their new delight
2. Others will covet and be jealous of your iPhone - because you are the proud owner, and
3. Criminals will specifically target the iPhone for theft.

This being the case, you would imagine that there is a lot of insurance policies for iPhones available. Sadly, this is not the case.

There is only 1 policy that is specifically a stated "iPhone Insurance" (more on that later) but there are a few other options.

One option that is often touted as a way around getting specific insurance for an expensive item it adding it to your household insurance. This can work, but there are 3 key drawbacks to doing this.

1. Usually home insurance policies have a FAR higher excess than any specific insurance policy, often £150 or more.

2. If you make a claim (albeit relatively small) for your iPhone on your house insurance, your house insurance premium will likely be more expensive next year. It will go through the roof.

3. How long would you comfortably be without your phone? You might expect it to be a long while for your house insurance to process a claim. Household insurers have been known to take weeks to solve a claim. Most customers cannot accept to wait weeks for their phone to be replaced. Are household insurers experts at replacing phones? Would you go to get your tooth fixed in a general hospital? Probably not. You would go to the expert, the specialist - the dentist. In the same way, it might be a wise move to use a specialist insurance firm to insure your iPhone.

This all leaves the question - What specialist insurer is there, that protects you and your iPhone with a decent level of cover AND is cost effective?

Let's look at what 'cost-effective' is:

The iPhone is only available on the O2 network. You can get an unofficial one, which has been unlocked, to work on other networks, but lets look at the official picture. The costs is £269 for the handset, plus there is a 24-month contract at either £35, £45 or £55 per month.

If you lost your iPhone after 6 months from getting it, you would still be contractually obliged to pay every month for the next 18 months. That means 18 months multiplied by a minimum of £35 per month ... a total of £630 or more - whether you got a replacement handset or not.

So in this instance you would need some kind of replacement to justify spending the £35+ each month.

Aside from this, there is the cost of replacement itself. This is likely to be around £600, although you might be able to get a second hand or less-than-legitimate iPhone for less.

So any insurance that would get you a replacement for a considerable amount less than £600 is cost-effective. Ideally (obviously) it needs to be as low cost as possible, but equally obviously, there is going to be some cost involved in the replacement.

You would then also want to consider what eventualities you want the insurance to protect you from - what level of cover do you need? iPhone theft might seem the most obvious possibility, but do you want to be protected if you simply lose it? Or if it is damaged? Do you need cover while you are abroad? Do you need extended warranty (ie if it simply stops working or malfunctions after the 12 month statutory manufacturer's warrantee)?

You need to think about this before you spend any money on what you think is 'insurance' for your iPhone - but actually might not be adequate protection. You could be paying for only one of these levels of cover.

A quick search on Google at www.google.co.uk will show you what your options are. And almost all roads lead to a company called 2u - www.2u.co.uk/iPhoneInsurance ... Doubtless other companies will follow 2u's lead once they see the success 2u is having with the iPhone Insurance. But meanwhile, it appears the best way to protect yourself is to insure it using the 2u iPhone Insurance.

According to the 2u webpage, it does offer cover for loss, theft, damage, water damage, international cover, fraudulent calls once stolen and extended warrantee, which pretty much covers all the bases you might want.

Wherever you chose to get yours from, one thing is clear - once you have got your iPhone and you start to realise what a great piece of kit it is, you are probably going to want to protect it with some kind of insurance that protects you and your iPhone properly.

Method #1 - Add more RAM

This is my favorite way to increase Vista overall performance! You will notice dramatic decrease in boot time when 2 GB RAM or more installed. If you have limited budget, then try the next method.

Method #2 - Use ReadyBoost

You can use your normal memory stick (some called it flash drive) to accelerate the speed. Not all memory stick are Vista compatible, however there are some tricks to force ReadyBoost on none-compatible memory stick.

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->SOFTWARE->Microsoft->Windows NT->CurrentVersion->EMDgmt, you should see few USB devices list, select one of them which represent the memory stick you want, change the "Device Status" to a value "2". If the "ReadSpeedKBs" and "WriteSpeedKBs" is below "1000" in hexadecimal, change to "1000".

Unplug your USB memory stick and re-plug again, you should be able to configure your USB for ReadyBoost! This is a cheap way to do, better than nothing. However, you really need a to get a faster drive.

Method #3 - Disable unused background services

Disables any excessive background services. Especially effective for home user who does not need many of the services; They you can free more resources for other application. Do not let unused services dominate the precious resources. Go to do some research on each service before trying anything, or you might disable some important items.

If you do these 3 methods correctly, you can cut down your boot time by half or more!

Vista added support for IPv6, improved network protocols for faster detection and transfer. In theory these nice features should take your Internet connection to the next level! Just like before, Vista slows down everything with lots of extra overheads. In this article, I will show you how to speed up your connection by turning off those features.

Step #1 - Turn Off Unneeded Network Protocol

Try to turn off unneeded protocol such as IPv6, Qos Packet Scheduler, File and Printer Sharing, Link-Layer Topology.

Step #2 - Use Static IP

Try to use static IP, assign an IP to your computer, don't rely on DHCP server to assign IP for you.

Step #3 - Use OpenDNS

Replace your ISP DNS server with OpenDNS, or any faster DNS server (You need to try them before you know).

Go to Control Panel -> Network or Internet -> Network and Sharing Center -> Manage Network Connections, select and highlight the connection, then right click and select properties.

Uncheck any unwanted protocol. Highlight IPv4 and select properties, set the IP address and DNS server accordingly. Use 208.67.220.220, 208.67.222.222 for OpenDNS server.

Step #4 - Increases local DNS cache

Vista will capture every DNS records you access, by increasing the cache size will minimize the needs to query.

Go to registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->SYSTEM->CurrentControlSet->Services->Dnscache->Parameters, create or change the value below, all in hexadecimal:

CacheHashTableBucketSize = 1

CacheHashTableSize = 180

MaxCacheEntryTtlLimit = ff00

MaxSOACacheEntryTtlLimit = 12d

Step #5 - Turn off TCP Auto Tuning

This might be the major reason, try to disable it or other settings. You need to manually configure TCP settings if you disable this function.

Use this command "netsh interface set global autotuning=disable" to turn off auto tuning, "netsh interface set global autotuning=normal" to turn on auto tuning. All command must run as Administrator.

Vista takes advantage of more advanced hardware, such as the hybrid hard disk, Gigabit network... Welcome to the future! However, if you are just like me, and other majority people out there, you need to disable some advanced features to optimize the speed for your current hardware.

Disable 2 features below to restore your file transfer and download speed. You can expect 20% to 40% increase in speed, but I doubt that Vista can run faster than XP in normal condition.

Feature #1 - Remote Differential Compression (RDC)

RDC will compare, compress and transfer multiple files across low bandwidth connection, such as the Internet. However, this feature needs to be supported by remote computer, and it will compare the files and update only the newest version. It creates overhead between connections, slows down high bandwidth and local drives' transfer rate.

To disable it, go to Control Panel -> Programs -> Turn Windows Features On or Off, locate "Remote Differential Compression" and uncheck it. Restart you computer.

Feature #2 - TCP Auto Tuning

Despite how great its' sound, in actual fact, it creates more overheads and problems. Vista will constantly monitor and fine tune your network connection, but some unsupported hardware will block and delay the operation.

To turn off TCP Auto Tuning, go to command prompt with administrator rights (press Windows key, and type "cmd. exe" without quote, then Ctrl+Shift+Enter), type "netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disable" to disable it. Use "netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=normal" to re-enable it.

If you tun off TCP Auto Tuning, please do the manual settings according or your Internet connection will not be optimized.

They just don't inform you that they did this, or that your computer needs this done consistently in order to operate at its best.

When using RegCLEAN, it will automatically repair and tuneup your PC. You can choose to watch the scan in progress is or simply let it run in the background. At the same time, when you use this program you can have it scheduled to complete scans when it is convenient for you. This will automate the maintenance process.

Make sure you have the memory stick inserted. See the 'Home' button on your PSP? Give it a press.

Scroll through with the < > buttons until you come to 'settings'. Now the 'up' 'down' buttons until you see 'USB connection'. Select it by pressing 'X', it will now display the USB connection. Over to your PC. Your pc should now have recognised that it has your PSP plugged into it. (New hard drive/storage device etc.)

Open the PSP file on your pc. This file will have a caps letter indicator, probably 'H'. (It may be different on your pc - doesn't really matter what the letter is as long as you know that it's the PSP file). Make a new folder call it something easy to find like 'MYPSP'. Inside your new folder (MYPSP),create another and call it 'PSPMUSIC'.

Now you have somewhere to copy your MP3 music files from your pc and onto the PSP. Copy your ripped cd files and any other MP3 format files into this folder. OK you're done. Back to the PSP, to play your tunes. Turn it on, scroll to the music area, scroll to 'Memory stick', select the folder (Press 'X'). There you go, lo and behold all your music is now available to be played. Enjoy!

Quite often, even uninstall routines will leave scraps of completely useless information in the Registry. Which will slow Windows down when it comes to trying to find the settings it really needs.

O2 XDA 2i Tomtom Crash Workaround

Having purchased a bluetooth GPS receiver for my O2 XDA 2i, I was a little disappointed that the Tomtom software that I had also purchased would crash every 5 or 10 minutes. This is infuriating because it's not something that you can fix on the move with 1 hand. I would have to stop the car, remove the PDA from it's holder, perform a soft reset which takes a couple of minutes, reconnect to the bluetooth GPS receiver, start the Tomtom software, put the phone back in it's holder, then carry on with my journey. Now imagine doing this 3 or 4 times throughout your journey!

Having searched for a fix on the internet I came up with a range of suggestions from XDA Developers. Some suggestions involved upgrading the memory card to one with a faster read/write transfer rate, which I did but still no joy. I still had the infuriating crashing problem!

I then had a brainwave after receiving an SMS message on the move. When I received the message the phone crashed in it's usual way, still infuriating you might think, but it gave me that Eureka moment. I realized that whenever the phone part of my PDA was attempting to do something it caused the Tomtom software to crash. This would then explain why the XDA would crash every 5 or 10 minutes.

As you may or may not know, each mobile phone network is divided up into 'cells'. Each 'cell' is a region of the country that is covered by a mobile phone antenna. If you are travelling in a car or train there will come a point where you are moving between one cell and another. When this happens your phone (or PDA) will perform a handshake procedure to let the antenna know that you're entering a part of the country covered by that particular antenna. Now obviously this handshake procedure takes just enough resources so that it causes the PDA to crash. I then searched more on the internet for a fix to this problem but could find nothing so I took it upon myself to fix it.

Firstly I tried to find a way that I could disable the phone software part of the PDA while allowing the rest of the PDA software to function as normal, this would obviously mean that the phone functionality was inoperable throughout my journey but it's a small price to pay for not getting lost. Now I know what you're thinking "just enable flight mode" and while this would disable the phone software part, it also disables the use of the bluetooth stack which renders the bluetooth GPS receiver useless. One option is to remove the SIM card from the phone, while this would work it means taking the back off the phone and removing the battery which causes a soft reset and unnecessary hassle. There is another way!

Here's what I did:

Firstly go to start, settings, phone

Under security tick 'Require PIN when phone is used'

Input a memorable PIN for the phone part of your PDA

Navigate back to the main screen

How to disable just the phone part of the PDA:

From the main screen tap the antenna and signal icon at the top of the screen

Enable flight mode.

Tap the same icon again and turn off flight mode.

A screen will appear asking you for your PIN, at this point click 'cancel'.

Your PDA is now fully functioning apart from the phone part because you have denied access to the SIM card.

How to re-enable the phone part of the PDA:

From the main screen tap the antenna and signal icon at the top of the screen

Enable flight mode.

Tap the same icon again and turn off flight mode.

A screen will appear asking you for your PIN, at this point enter the PIN that you chose previously.

The phone part is now functioning normally again.

It would be nice to have a proper fix to this problem so that I could receive phone calls and text messages on the move but I can live with this for now.

I had recently purchased a TomTom ONE GPS Systems for my car. Here is my own opinion/review of this product. First off this system came with a 1GB memory stick for your applications and maps. The TomTom One GPS System was around $349 at Best Buy. I love this device because you can mount it in your vehicle as well as carry it around wherever you go. It usually connects to about 8 out of 12 satellites available. I have had this device for about a year now and it has only got me lost twice, but that might be because I’m always to lazy to update it.

The other day my buddy was in my car, and he had the urge to try to hooked up his Bluetooth cell phone to my TomTom ONE GPS to see if it would give us weather, traffic reports, etc. It indeed gave us weather reports, but we could not get the traffic reports to work. It would come up with a green button in the top right hand corner but never notified us of anything else, so we weren’t sure if it was even working or not.

The TomTom ONE GPS also has a option for “Night Colors”, which is great in my opinion. I mean who wants a bright light glaring in the face from the GPS? Night mode changes all map colors to darker colors so you can still see them at night but they don’t blind you while you are trying to drive. I have noticed that the TomTom ONE GPS, has a option for TomTom Plus Services. I guess you can pay $15.00 a month or so and receive instant map updates as well as POI(Point of Interest) updates from this service. I personally am not in the car enough to pay for it, but some people may desire to have this.

In a nutshell, I think the TomTom ONE GPS Navigation System is well worth the money. I just recently moved to Florida and have no clue where I am going. The TomTom saves me from having to ask people where to go or to get on Google Maps every time I want to get somewhere.

A digital camera captures images in a digital format, unlike a conventional camera, which captures images using a photographic film.

History:

Using a mosaic photosensor, Eugene F. Lally of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory first showed how still photos could be produced in a digital domain. An engineer at Eastman Kodak, Steve Sasson, used solid-state CCD chips to build a prototype digital camera having a resolution of 0.01 megapixel, and recorded black and white digital images to a magnetic cassette tape. With this prototype model, Steve took the first image in December of 1975 taking 23 seconds to capture it.

In 1988, Fuji DS-1P became the first digital camera that captured images as a computerized file. However, the camera never entered the U.S. market. In 1991, Kodak DCS-100 was the first commercially available digital camera, which used a 1.3 megapixel sensor. If you wear glasses you probably want an adjustment on camera's viewfinder (a diopter). How important is remote control for you? Or tripods? What other special features do you want or need?

Ratings and comparisons of different digital cameras and their features are fairly easy to find online. Check photo forums to find out what other people have to say about them. Thinking ahead will save you a lot of hassle when you select and buy your new digital camera.

Finally, they’re all here. The Xbox 360 has had the next generation gaming market to itself for a year. Now its two competitors, the Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii, are here. No more speculating about speed. No more guessing about memory. Now we can take a look and see exactly how they stack up compared to each other.

Let the console wars begin again.

Price

The PS3 has two configurations much like the Xbox 360. The PS3 comes in a $499 version that comes with a 20 GB hard drive and a $599 version that comes with a 60 GB hard drive; Wi-Fi; and memory stick, SD, and Compact Flash slots.

The Xbox 360 has two configurations. It comes in a $299 core version and a $399 version that comes with a 20GB hard drive.

The Nintendo Wii is the cheapest of the bunch with just one configuration that costs $250.

Processing Power

The Playstation 3 comes with its Cell processor. It’s a PowerPC based core that runs at 3.2 GHz that also have seven DSPs that run at 3.2 GHz. This configuration can do about 2 Teraflops.

The Xbox 360 has a Custom IBM PowerPC processor. This processor also runs at 3.2 GHz. However, Xbox went with a true 3 core processor compared to the one general processor of the Cell and seven additional DSPs. This configuration can do about 1 Teraflop.

The Nintendo Wii includes its Broadway processor, a PowerPC based processor running at 729 MHz.

Disc Media

Part of the reason the PS3 is so much more expensive than the Xbox 360 is because the Sony decided to include a Blu-ray drive on the system. The drive can play both Blu-ray movies and regular DVDs. The Xbox 360 comes with a DVD player and an HD-DVD add-on is planned. The Nintendo Wii uses a DVD drive; however, the system will not work for playback of movies, just Nintendo games.......

Backwards Compatibility

The Playstation 3 is just like the PS2 was. You’ll be able to play both PS2 and PSone games on the PS3. Nintendo is taking things a bit further. Their system will be compatible with the Gamecube games and also the Gamecube controllers since the two systems use very different controllers. Not only that, but the Wii will also have the ability to download games from the original Nintendo (NES), Super Nintendo (SNES), and the Nintendo 64.

Sweet Features

If you want high definition gaming, then the PS3 is the way to go. It comes with a Blu-ray drive built in and can output in 1080p. Although the PS3 controller may look familiar, it’s had some updates. The controller is now motion sensing so in some games you’ll be able to move your character or fly a plane just by moving the controller.

The Xbox 360 was built to work with Windows XP media center. If you have a computer that already has media center on it, you’ll be able to view pictures, videos, and even recorded TV by using your Xbox. You won’t need to put your PC in your living room to take advantage of having a Media Center PC.

The Nintendo Wii decided to completely change the way gaming controllers are built. In the past, one controller was always held with both hands. The Wii’s controller looks more like a TV remote control than a game controller. It has a built in motion sensor so, for example, to swing a sword, you simply move you hand just like you were really swinging a sword.

Hopefully this review has helped you compare the three next generation gaming systems. Each has its pluses and minuses, and feature that are unique to it. Apple recently announced the release of the iPod Radio Remote. This little accessory combines a wired remote control with a FM radio receiver. It works with the iPod nano and the most recent generation (fifth) of iPods.

The iPod Radio Remote is a convenient way for music lovers to control their iPod and add FM radio for a reasonable price point. Using the remote, you can skip tracks and adjust the volume of your iPod even when it’s in a pocket or backpack. It’s main feature - lets you and listen to FM radio stations while it displays station and song information on the iPod’s screen.

“The iPod Radio Remote combines two great features in one elegant product,” Greg Joswiak, Apple’s iPod Marketing guy said recently. “The iPod Radio Remote is both the best remote control and the best FM radio listening experience for iPod.”

If you search the Apple iPod store online, you will also find a couple of competitors that launched similar products ahead of Apple. But I must admit, the Apple Radio Remote is a cleaner package. If you live in the city and get good FM reception, this is a nice little add-on. If you live in the burbs and are looking for great sound - similar to the quality that you get from your iPod, then forget about the iPod Radio Remote. Why, because it is like any other small FM radio, it needs a strong signal to give you decent sound.

But don’t give up, there is quite a lot happening in the real time audio market and you will have more choices in the coming months.

There were several rumors in 2005 about Apple and satellite radio for instance. "The iPod is the biggest, baddest thing around and satellite radio is this small, cool device," said Steve Mather, an analyst with Sander Morris Harris. "Put them together and it's the ultimate."

But there has been no evidence that such a dream machine is in the works. Earlier this year, Sirius Satellite Radio CEO Mel Karmazin said he had approached Steve Jobs, the chief of iPod maker Apple Computer, about a possible deal but said Jobs wasn't interested.

Sirius didn’t sit on its butt. They created their first portable device called the S50, a small, sleek device used with a docking port in your car. It is like a TiVo for radio. It automatically stores music for later listening. You can schedule recordings from both music and talk stations (with a firmware upgrade), save favorite songs, and link up to a PC to load music files. But… you can't see the song list for recorded music. The S50 is available only with a car kit and the controls are hard to use.

Not to be left out, XM recently unveiled a new satellite radio for spring ‘06. Like their initial radio, the new receiver will pick up satellite signals as you are walking around outside. No docking station is needed, which is a huge advantage over the Sirius S50. It also has 1 gigabyte of memory so that you can record 50 hours of radio play. Out doing the S50 - there are no restrictions on how or what you can record. In fact, XM has made it even easier to capture individual songs.

The new XM player also provides a "tag" feature that let’s you immediately purchase any song you hear from Napster's online store. When you reconnect the player to your computer, you can get those MP3's that you just purchased to create a mix of MP3's and radio content on the player.

XM now appears to be ahead of Sirius and Apple in the radio wars. To prove it they announced the XM Passport, a small card that can be plugged in and out of future XM enabled devices. With the passport card, you need only buy one subscription to XM radio to power a number of satellite receivers; just plug in your passport card.

The New 5Th Generation Apple iPod

To date, there has been a number of Apple iPod models. Well, with the release of the new iPod Video, there are now officially three iPod models for the 5th generation of iPods. The earlier 4th generation models, including the popular iPod Mini, iPod Photo, U2 and 20GB iPod are now officially history.

The three official 5G iPod models include the iPod Shuffle, iPod Nano and iPod Video. What's the difference between this new range of iPods and the previous 4G models? Broadly speaking, the differences are:

Hard Disk

Two of the new iPod models, iPod Shuffle and iPod Nano, are based on flash hard disk technology. This new hard disk is ultra slim and is able to withstand shock and vigorous movement. Unlike 4G models, this make the iPod Shuffle and iPod Nano ultra slim and allow them to be used for vigorous activities, including sporting activity, dance, accidental drops, etc. Previous 4G models were less robust and vigorous activity tend to cause possible malfunction.

Battery life

Battery life on the 5G iPod has improved tremendously. One of the major complaints about 4G iPod was the short battery life(8hrs) and battery life draining away quickly after heavy use. The new iPod lasts up to 14 hrs and has a better battery lifespan.

Color is standard

Unlike 4G model, where the iPod Photo model was the only model with color, the new iPod Nano and iPod Video comes standard with color screen and playback.

Choice of video

With the new iPod Video, there is now a range of activities, including data, music, photo and video that can be supported on one iPod. Previously, video was not available as an option.

Standardized casing

The 4G iPod included the multi-color iPod mini, with a choice of pink, blue, green and silver. The only option for black was the U2 model........

Today, the colors has been standardized to black or white (except iPod Shuffle - White only). In addition, all iPod casing has been standardized to hard acrylic instead of the anionized aluminium for iPod Mini and hard acrylic for the other models.

However, the hard acrylic casing used for the 5G iPod models seems to have a tendency to scratch as reported by many iPod user websites. It is advised that a iPod casing or protector film be purchased for the new 5G iPod immediately. A good selection can be found here.

Compact Clickwheel

The iPod Clickwheel was previously a scroll wheel that was designed and supplied by a 3rd party. The new iPod clickwheels are now designed and produced by Apple itself. The functionalities are similar but users reported better response feedback.

Headphone jack

Headphone jacks for all iPod models, including the very first 1G iPod up till the 4G models, has always been on top of the iPod. The iPod Nano breaks ground by having the headphone jack at the bottom.

Which iPod model to choose?

As of this writing, the iPod Video has only been out for less than 2 weeks. The current 5G range of iPod seems to be the most complete and versatile thus far, and we can see that the 3 different models are essentially targeted at different segments of the iPod user market. iPod Shuffle

The iPod Shuffle is obviously targeted at users who have a lower budget or those who only have an occasional need for a music player. The Shuffle comes without a screen and user can only choose to listen to music in a sequence or have it shuffled randomly. Because of it's lower price, this model has become a choice for those who desire for an iPod but may not have the neccessary budget.

iPod Nano

The iPod Nano is now the mainstream iPod model with the exit of 4G iPod models. With a size and thickness slightly larger than a credit card, this is now a runaway favorite iPod model. Users have a choice of data, music and photo with this colored screen iPod.

iPod Video

The newest kid on the block, the iPod Video, is desired by those with a higher budget or who wish to watch video on their iPod. It has a slightly larger screen than the iPod Nano and play a crisp 30 fps video display. With not many iPod videos available for download as yet, we'll need to see if this model can overtake the iPod Nano as the mainstream iPod model.

Creating iPod-Ready Video Clips

Last year the fifth generation iPod was launched. The best thing about this latest release is its ability to store and play videos. However, the public was disappointed because the iPod’s companion software, iTunes, is unable to convert existing videos to a format that can be read by the iPod.

During that time, a third party software is required to be able to convert video clips for iPods. This is not the case anymore because the newest iTunes 6.0.2 comes with a video conversion tool to be able to transform video clips into an iPod-compatible format. As a typical Apple product, the conversion tool is subtly integrated into iTunes, so not everyone is able to maximize this feature. Here is a little tutorial to help you convert your video clips.

iTunes 6.0.2 is capable of converting Quick-Time compatible video formats into iPod-ready video files. These formats can be MOV, MPEG and MP4. These files are converted to H.264 format video. This handles videos that are 320 pixels wide. iTunes does not allow reconfiguring this setting. The format is great when the videos are viewed in iPods, but if these files are viewed on TV or PC, the quality is not as good.

The first step is to add your video clips to your iTunes library. This can be done by simply dragging and dropping them into your iTunes library window. Select the files you want to convert and then right click on your mouse button. A menu will popup and you have to select the option “Convert Selection for iPod”. iTunes will automatically convert the selected files into an iPod-ready video format. You will be able to monitor the status of the conversion process by clicking on “Source” and then “Converting Songs”.

After converting your video clips, you now how two files with the same content. You may delete the older file. It is very easy to distinguish between the two files. All you have to do is to check the file properties and look at the “Date Added” column.

Now that your video clips are compatible to your iPod, you may now transfer the files and begin viewing your favorite video clips anytime and anywhere!

What Phone System Does My Meridian Telephone Work On?

Nortel Networks, Northern Telecom and Meridian are terms that many end users have said to me when describing what phone system they have. It's easy to get confused here, but we can sort some of this out.

Northern Telecom became Nortel some years ago. More recently, they have taken the name of Nortel Networks. This company has been and remains one of the largest phone system manufacturers in the world. They have made everything from the Central Office phone switches that provide phone lines, Centrex, T-1's, and PRI's to Norstar and Meridian phone systems for business offices to single line phones for residential use.

Finding the model number for your phone is one of the first things you need to do in order expand your system or replace bad phones. If you order the wrong phone model, it won't have the same features and may not work at all on your phone system.

One of the most confusing things is that the word Meridian is used across much of their product line for business office phone system equipment. If you have a Northern Telecom or Nortel phone system in your office, there is a fair chance that it says Meridian somewhere on it. Meridian was put on Centrex phones, Norstar phones and Meridian and SL-1 PBX phones. If you are trying to identify what type of phone or phone system you have, the fact that it says Meridian on it doesn't identify it, but it does lead to a path that will help you to do so.

Look at the bottom of the telephone. Ignore the serial number. There is sometimes a model number. It may have a model number such as M7324, M7310, M7208, M7100, T7316, T7316e or T7100. If it has any of these it is a phone on a Norstar phone system.

The Meridian PBX and SL-1 have model numbers including M2008, M2006, M2616D, M3901, M3902, M3903, M3904 and M3905. There may be many variations of these.

Nortel and Aastra (that's another story for antoher day) also make Centrex phones and other single line and two line phones that say Meridian on them. These include M5316, M5208, M5008, M5312, M5216, M5212, M5209, M5112, M5009, M9417CW, M9316CW, M9110, M9116, M9120, M8004, M8009, and M8314.

The model numbers may be absent. If so, look for the part #. It will almost always begin with NT followed by several numbers and usually some letters. For instance, an M7310 is also known as NT8B20. The Aastra phones may begin with an A.

Remember, Meridian labelled phones may be on a Norstar system, a Meridian PBX or as part of your Centrex.

The iPod seems to have induced a certain trend in the consumer electronics industry as many companies on the market rushed to manufacture accessories for the little device that allows you to take music with you wherever you go. Speakers and headphones were among the first choices as iPod accessories for consumer electronics companies. The next step was wireless speakers and headphones to allow more freedom of movement. We'll try to discuss the pros and cons of wireless peripherals for the iPod as well as the models that each wireless component works with.

Logitech

Logitech began marketing in 2005 a wireless headphone unit that works with any model of iPod that has a dock connector on the base. This feature is standard on all new models and is available on older models as well. The headphones use Bluetooth technology to connect to the iPod through an adapter that transmits the signal. They come with rechargeable batteries that supposedly can play up to eight hours of music per charge.

The wireless headset is very light and weighs only 3.2 ounces, with the adapter unit weighing less than an ounce. iPod controls are provided on one of the earpieces, so there is no need to return to the iPod to adjust the volume or move through the play list. The iPod can be left sitting on a counter or on a desk, and the headphones will pick up the signal for up to 30 feet away.

Logitech also markets a wireless music receiver and transmitter that turns your current stereo into a receiver and set of speakers for your iPod. It comes with its own rechargeable batteries so it doesn't drain your iPod. The receiver unit simply plugs into your stereo system and the transmitter onto your iPod. The system works with any iPod or MP3 player with a standard 3.5mm headphone output.

The benefit of this system is that you can use it to make your existing speakers wireless without having to purchase additional equipment. It is easy to plug in and use so you can easily move to other rooms in the house. The only drawback is the 30-feet distance restriction between the receiver and the transmitter.

Macally

Macally designed a Bluetooth based BlueWave iPod headset that connects to the iPod through a transmitter plugged into the iPod's headphone port. One issue with the BlueWave system is that the transmitter unit doesn't use the iPod's connector for power but two non-rechargeable AAA batteries. Another issue would be the plastic notch situated by the headphone jack that prevents the transmitter from wobbling on the iPod's top and which you will need to remove if you own an iPod shuffle or a first or second generation iPod.

The signal's range should be around 30 feet but it varies greatly depending on the environment you are in, especially if doors or walls stand in the way. The headphones can provide up to eight hours of interrupted music depending on volume level and other factors. They are also powered by two non-rechargeable AAA batteries.

With the BlueWave system you can also wirelessly stream music from your iPod by connecting the headphones to the home speaker system with a RCA patch cable that fits in the line-out jack from the headphones.

Oregon Scientific

Oregon Scientific released in 2005 a very interesting wireless speaker system designed for the iPod, the iBall. The speaker is shaped like a bowling ball and it connects to a transmitter dock, that holds the iPod, through 2.4 Ghz wireless technology, with adaptive frequency hopping spread spectrum. The signal range should be up to 100 feet and the rechargeable batteries provide up to 8 hours of music on a single charge. It is compatible with iPods, iPod photos, iPod nanos, and iPod minis.

The iBall has a built-in remote for the iPod which you can use even if the iPod is not in the room. The speaker has a round LCD display that you can use to change volume and skip tracks, find out the time, wireless signal strength, battery power, play/pause status.

Wi-Gear

The iMuffs from Wi-Gear are wireless headphones made especially for the iPod but with a twist. They use Bluetooth technology to connect wirelessly to both your iPod and your Bluetooth enabled phone, so you can use them as a wireless headset for the cell phone. When you receive a call, the iMuffs pause the music on the iPod, ring in the headphones and allow you to speak in the integrated microphone.

The iMuffs system has a small receiver that hooks on top of the iPod and comes with a rechargeable battery that provides up to 12 hours of interrupted music. As expected with Bluetooth, the iMuffs headphones can pick up the signal in the 30 feet signal range. They also feature iPod controls on each earpiece for pause, volume, skip and search.

In the future, the market of wireless headphones and speakers for the iPod will become a bigger share of the overall iPod accessories market, as the signal range will increase, the audio output quality will get better and the batteries the manufacturers use for power will allow more hours of playtime.

Telescopes act as windows to the universe. It is with the help of telescopes that we can study the solar system and view the conjunctions of stars. They act as barrier- breaking instruments between the human beings and the outer space. The universe is no more a mystery to us that exists beyond our reach and we owe it all to the telescopes.

Filters- These are very essential for telescope users because they reduce the glare on the eyepiece and scatter the light thereby making it less strenuous for us to view distant objects.

Do not get impressed by the magnification of the telescopes. This is because magnification alone is of no use if it just produces large but hazy images.

Aperture- This is the most important factor while deciding on a telescope. Aperture is the opening that collects light so its important to choose a telescope with a larger aperture that will ensure a clearer and a more detailed image quality.

Resolution- This enables the telescopes to produce a more detailed image. So always opt for a telescope, which has a higher resolution. Moreover since resolution is also determined by the aperture, therefore the larger the aperture the better the resolution.

Focal length- The distance between the optical center of the lens or the mirror and the optical center of the eyepiece is known as the focal length. The focal length is what determines the magnification in telescopes. Larger focal lengths imply more magnification.

Instead of just communicating over the internet with text and emoticons, people are beginning to realize just how easy and fun it is to send video clips through cyberspace. Webcam setups range from simple to complex, and increasing the complexity is only a matter of adding functionality through software, custom code and/or equipment connections.

A simple Webcam setup consists of a Digital Camera attached to your computer, usually through the USB port. The camera part of the Webcam setup is just a digital camera -- nothing out of the ordinary so far. The "Webcam" functions of the camera originate from the software. Webcam software takes a frame from the digital camera at a preset interval (for example, the software might grab a still image from the camera once every 30 seconds) and transfers it to another location for viewing.

If you're interested in using your Webcam for streaming video, you'll want a Webcam system with a high frame rate. The frame rate indicates the number of pictures the software can grab and transfer in one second. For streaming video, you need a minimum rate of at least 15 frames per second (fps), and 30 fps is optimal. To achieve high frame rates, you must necessarily have a high-speed internet connection.

Once it captures a frame, the software broadcasts the image over your Internet connection. There are several broadcast methods. Using the most common method, the software turns that image into a JPEG (compressed) file and uploads it to a web server using File Transfer Protocol (FTP). You can easily place a JPEG image onto any web page in this manner and post your webcam images on the internet.

If you don't have your own Web server or web site, you can also use your web cam to send a video email. First, launch the software that comes with the camera. Depending on the model, the process of e-mailing and recording your video messages may vary. Press Start or Record to begin the video message. Click Stop and then preview the video. You can then click E-mail or Send, which automatically opens your default e-mail program.

When sending a video e-mail, the longer the video message recorded, the bigger the attachment will be, so make sure the recipient's computer can handle the size. The recipient of the e-mail does not need special software to see your video message; they simply choose to open the attachment and the mini movie will play.

Another increasingly popular way to use your web cam is a chat session with webcams in "real time" with instant messaging (IM) programs. During an IM chat, there will be an option to start the webcam right on the screen, or under the Options or Tools menu. In Windows Messenger, for example, the words Start Camera are on the right-hand side of the screen. It is also possible to adjust the volume, window size, and video resolution with IM options. The person on the other end also needs a webcam to visually chat.

Adjust your camera's focus, point it toward your face, and most importantly, look right into the "eye" of the webcam so your friends on the other end see more than just your forehead. Keep in mind that some webcams require an additional microphone to record audio.

Don't expect terrific video quality. It's often possible to adjust the video resolution by toying with the webcam's software settings, but the higher the quality, the choppier the video frame rates will be. Webcams can also be used for remote security monitoring, but beware of hackers who could intercept your video feed and then spy on YOU. Make full use of passwords and encryption.
